The Halloween 'bean bag flipping game'.

The Halloween 'bean bag flipping game'.

Subject

Halloween vocabulary and structures.

Group size:

Suitable for classes of 1-8

Team teaching game?

Can be played with one teacher.

Materials

Focus cards. Halloween vocabulary of your choice. A minimum of six cards.

Team tokens. These are cards with a different colour front and back. (I use red and blue.)

One bean bag or similar (Something that doesn’t bounce too much) e.g. badminton shuttlecock, /cushion/soft toy for each team.

Targets. Make the size of your targets suitable to the ability of your students. E.g. Hula hoops, rope circles, boxes etc.

Game set up.

Go through the vocabulary and grammar point, if you have one, with the students in preparation for the game. You can do this at the table before moving onto the floor.

Repeat the vocabulary and structure as you place the focus cards by your targets. Repeat once more as you place the tokens next to the focus cards.

You will need to divide your students into two teams. Try and have equal ability.

 Line up in relay fashion.

Playing rules.

In teams, line up behind the line.

In relay fashion the teams throw their bean bags into a target that has a token showing the opposing team’s colour. (Red tries to land in a target with a blue card showing and vice versa)

If you get the bean bag into the target, say the vocabulary or the target language and turn the token over to show your own teams colour.

If you land in a square with the token showing your own team’s colour then just say the vocabulary or structure. Do not turn over the token.

The player returns the bean bag to the next competitor and the actions are repeated.

After a fixed time period, (about 4 minutes) count up the team tokens showing for each side and announce the winner.

Change the parameters (Vocabulary to answer form, answer form to question form etc.) if required and repeat.

Variations.

Works for almost any topic and easy sentence structures.

I’ll have my Christmas version ready too…

Richard’s comments.

An all-time classic. Dead easy. Very fast and flexible to the extreme. One of my desert island classics. I wouldn’t go anywhere without it.
